Is Windows an operating system or an application?
First thing we need to assess before we answer a common question about Windows, let me spill my thoughts about operating system and applications.
Operating system is the most important software that runs on a computer. Basically, it manages the computer's memory, performance, storage, and process the hardware utilities as well as software applications. The operating system coordinates all of this to make sure each program execute properly.

Mostly, operating system is pre-loaded when you buy a computer. And most of the time, Windows are the common pre-installed operating system in the market. Alternatively, there are operating system like MacOS built by Apple and Linux, which is an open-source operating system with a lot of distributions, like Ubuntu, Kali Linux, Debian, and many more.
Moving on, on the contrary, application is a program that execute to perform a specific task. All operating system has pre-installed applications to manage tasks effectively. Specifically, it is a program that mostly used by us. For example, this blog website is an example of application where in you can write blog in web browser. Web browser also is one of the examples of application, where in you can browse information on the Internet. So, jumping in our question, is Windows is an operating system or an application?

Generally, Windows is an operating system, just like what I said previously, it is one of the most common used operating system in the market. But there are applications inside this operating system that already installed by the company like Microsoft word, where in you can edit documents, Microsoft power point, a program that can generate a slide presentation, and so much more.
